Handicrafts can be found in the larger towns of Jordan where tourists frequent.
Mosaics can also be found in a number
of other towns and cities, but the small factories are found in Madaba. Here, one can also see the famous Madaba Map. Part
of this floor mosaic dates to the 6th century AD. It is in the early Byzantine church of Saint George and is the oldest surviving
original depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. In Madaba one can also find mosaics schools. They can also be
found in the Mt. Nebo area, too.
Artisan cooperatives can be found in Makawir where woven rugs or kilms are of handed
carded wool with natural dyes.
Other local crafts include ostrich-egg painting, bead co-operatives that import lapiz
lazuli, malachite, yellow amber and red coral to add to silver bracelets and necklaces.
Other popular item (especially
popular at Petra) are jars filled with layers of multi-colored sand, often formed into decorations. Embroidered material and
hand blown glass bottles are other items found throughout Jordan.
Religious items and holy water are found in Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan,
and products from the Dead Sea for skin care are extremely popular and can be found throughout Jordan.
