The people of Peru make many wonderful hand crafted items, the most famous of which is clothing made from alpaca wool in the
highlands or Sierra region. Be careful when purchasing alpaca wool clothing by making sure that it is not actually synthetic
or ordinary wool. Baby alpaca wool is not from baby alpacas but from the first sheering of the season or the throat of the
alpaca and contains softer wool.
Be cautious when purchasing anything that looks old or like an artifact, such as
a piece of jewelry or pottery, as it may be a fake. It is also illegal to trade anything that is historical to Peru, and you
could be prosecuted.
Craft items that you can purchase in Peru include:
Pullovers
and other clothing made from alpaca wool
Wall Carpets or Tejidos
Carvings in stone, wood, or dried pumpkin
Silver
and gold jewelry
Musical instruments such as pan flutes and skin drums
