Turkish rugs and tapestries have a long tradition in the region of Asia Minor. Although it is impossible to determine the
origins of rug weaving, it is known that it has been continued since as early as 7000 B.C. The tradition was brought to Turkey
by the Seljuk Turks and was continued by the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were first adorned with animal motifs, but later geometric
designs took their place. While no rugs exist of the older designs they can be seen in paintings that were made during earlier
times.
