DAY 1 - ROME / TUSCAN COUNTRYSIDE

Upon arrival at Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci Airport, we will be greeted by our professional English-speaking tour escort who will remain with us throughout the duration of this program. Board our awaiting private deluxe air-conditioned motor coach and relax as we journey through the scenic landscapes of northern Lazio and southern Tuscany until we arrive in Chianciano Terme. After check-in at our hotel, we will have ample time to unpack and freshen up prior to this afternoon’s escorted ‘passeggiata’ through the old quarter of this important Tuscan stronghold.

Later this evening enjoy a refreshing aperitif during a brief welcome reception at the hotel, followed by a wonderfully prepared dinner at the Castello di Spaltenna where we will enjoy our first taste of authentic Tuscan cuisine.

DAY 2 - CHIUSI / LA FOCE

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel prior to today’s full excursion in search of exploring some of the back roads of the hidden Tuscany. Today’s first stop will be in Chiusi, a small town founded by the Etruscans who reigned over most of central Italy long before the advent of the Roman Empire. During our visit, our escort will lead us to the intimate cathedral, one of the oldest in all of Tuscany, where we can enjoy interesting ‘mosaics’ which are really 19th century art nouveau sponge paintings. We will have ample time to visit on our own the Archeological Museum, with its vast collection of Etruscan relics.  We can possibly arrange for a visit to the Tomba della Scimmia, dating back to the 5th century BC, to admire some of the area’s best preserved Etruscan tombs decorated with fascinating paintings.

After lunch on our own, our back roads journey leads to the ‘Estate of La Foce’, overlooking the entire Val D’Orcia for a guided visit through the elegant gardens designed by the English landscape architect, Cecil Pinsent. Villa La Foce is of particular interest as it was purchased by Antonio and Iris Origo in 1924.  It was then completely restored and is the source material for two well-know novels (‘Images and Shadows’ and ‘War in the Val D’Orcia’) written by Iris Origo. On the way back to the Castello di Spaltenna, enjoy a delightful dinner at characteristic Tuscan Inn.
